Coconut Oil and Alzheimer’s Disease

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the miracles of coconut oil and today I came across an interesting link with the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease.

I came across the blog of Dr Mary Newport and an article about the story of her and her husband. Below is a very simple summary of information from various sources, includingthis article from the Alliance for Natural Health. Please not this is NOT medical advice, it’s a thought starter for you to do more research and speak to your own doctor.

Mary’s husband suffered from Alzheimer’s and the various drugs prescribed were not helping. When she couldn’t get her husband on any trials, she started researching what’s behind the cause of this disease. Her discoveries showed that certain brain cells may have difficulty using glucose, the brain’s principle source of energy. Without glucose, neurons in the brain started to die.

There is an alternative source of energy, ketones, which are a form of lipid, or fat. If the body is deprived of carbohydrates (which break down to form glucose), the body produces ketones naturally. Since cutting all carbohydrates from the diet would be very difficult, Mary started looking for a dietary source, and this was in the form of Medium Chain Triglycerides. When an MCT (or you may have heard it called Medium Chain Fatty Adic – MCFA) is digested, the liver converts it to ketones.

These ketones in the diet have also been mentioned as potential treatments for other diseases including Parkinsons, MS, Huntingtons, ALS, Epilepsy and Type I & II Diabetes.

It is important to note that the Alzheimer’s Association make no reference to coconut oil or the studies done by this doctor. Is this a case of the information being untrue or a case of the pharmaceutical industry not wanting to hear about cheap and natural foods improving the health of patients? I honestly don’t know.

It’s interesting to note that Mary’s husband showed remarkable improvements in his disease and started to reverse the effects over a period of 12 months.
