Hygenic handwashing taken too far?

My toes curled up in horror when I saw an ad on TV this week for a new hand wash dispenser being advertised, the Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash System. At a first glance, you may think this is a great product, but I think it’s irresponsible advertising and scare mongering at it’s worst.

First of all, yes, your hands are dirty when you touch the soap dispenser, but you’re about to wash them and you DON’T have to touch the soap dispenser again after your hands are clean, so who cares.

Secondly, it’s the TAP that spreads the germs, not the soap dispenser. Not once in their TV ad do they show someone turning on or off a tap. Why you ask? Because then consumers will realise it’s the tap where the germs are spread.

So, here’s the ‘Healthy Households’ top tips for washing hands without spreading germs.

  1. use your forearm to get soap out of your soap dispenser, or the side of your hand that isn’t dirty (thus eliminating the need for the Dettol No-Touch Hand  Wash System.
  2. for taps with levers, turn them on & off with your arm like you see them doing in ER & Grey’s Anatomy when the doctors are scrubbing in!
  3. for those with taps you have to turn on/off with your hands, use a piece of paper towel, tissue, or a cloth to turn the tap on when your hands are dirty. Turn the tap off with clean hands.

Stop and think before getting lured in with products that aren’t necessary, plus, who knows what toxic chemicals are in their handwash. Juse use natural products instead.
